Private Tour Plan

Itinerary

Ideal tour for those looking to visit some amazing sites without wasting time driving in & out of Athens, but instead overnight & enjoy beautiful, authentic “Greek” locations like Sparta & Mystras, Monemvasia, Nafplio town, and Dimitsana village. Furthermore, you’ll be exploring Zagorochoria, the beautiful city of Ioannina, Delphi, Vergina, and Meteora. It’s a great mix! Included is an excellent accommodation that you can’t experience in the big cities. For up to 7 people, but we can also plan for bigger groups as long as there are no “strangers” in your group! You can adjust the tour by adding, removing, or substituting sites/locations.

DAY 1: FROM ATHENS TO ANCIENT CORINTH – MYCENAE – EPIDAURUS – NAFPLIO

You will meet your private driver/tour leader at your Athens hotel for an 8:00 a.m. departure. On a short trip of no more than 1 hour, you enter the Mythical Peloponnese through the Corinth Canal for this “real Greece” experience. The Corinth Canal is the first stop, and then to MYCENAE, home to some of Greece’s most famous ancient ruins.

Wander around the site & museum before hopping back in the vehicle and exploring the “old town” of NAFPLIO, the famous Venetian fortress of Palamidi with its 999 steps. Then head to EPIDAURUS, home to an ancient, beautifully preserved theater.

You have the "option" to add Ancient Corinth to the itinerary of Day 1 and/or walk down the 999 steps, enjoying fantastic views.

Overnight at probably the most beautiful Greek town, Nafplio.

Optional extra day: Hydra Island [Our -in advance- apologies for the several suggestions and options but the Peloponnese is simply limitless]

After a quick 1-hour drive from Nafplio town, we arrive at the beautiful peninsula village of Ermioni (or Metochi pier) to catch the boat to Hydra. This is a lovely, easy, and quick 25-minute ride (each way) from the Peloponnese mainland to take you to Hydra Island and back. Note: This area of Ermioni, Hydra & Spetses islands, Portoheli, is a hidden gem that Greeks only explore, and which the rich & famous residents from all over the world try to hide even more to preserve the family holiday style.

Hydra is a historic and cosmopolitan island and the most relaxing Greek island. No cars or noise exist, but it is still extremely popular and “real Greek,” unlike places like Mykonos or Santorini! Explore on foot and enjoy the views, the water, the coastline, and the beautiful narrow cobblestone streets, doors, windows, and houses. [You could consider this a round-trip depending on the time of year and available time.]

Adding Hydra to your itinerary means you will spend two nights (instead of one) in beautiful Nafplio town!

DAY 2: FROM NAFPLIO TO MONEMVASIA CASTLE

Starting from Nafplio, our destination will be Monemvasia, but -should you also agree-  to taking not the fast/shorter motorway route but exploring the glorious coastline of the East Peloponnese before climbing up the mountain range with several stops and lunch on the way.

Late afternoon and evening are dedicated to MONEMVASIA, where you will spend the night (if you book early enough to secure one of the great guesthouses of your choice), enjoying the atmospheric castle town, the views of the castle, and the striking blue water, plus food and drink. If you don’t make a last-minute booking overnight, you will be inside the atmospheric Monemvasia castle town.

Monemvasia is located on a small island linked to the mainland by a short causeway. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period. If you don’t make a last-minute booking, you will most likely be accommodated inside the atmospheric Monemvasia castle town.

Optional extra day: Kyparissi (Cypress) village

Kyparissi is the kind of holiday place that, if you know about it, you can only tell your closest friends about it because you are afraid of spoiling it. But it would be a hard place to "spoil" just because of the difficulties in getting here.

It is a secluded paradise backed by the craggy slopes of Mount Parnon and fronted by the cobalt blue of the Myrtoan Sea. There are 3 parts to Kyparissi. The mountainous Vrisi village, about 100 meters above the level of the sea, is the first one that you meet as you descend from the winding road of Parnonas. Paralia (beach in Greek) is the one that gathers the lion’s share of visitors. Lastly, there is the Metropolis, the last but not least interesting part of the village that overlooks its most beautiful beach.

DAY 3: FROM MONENVASIA TO MANI PENINSULA – SPARTA & MYSTRAS

Leaving behind Monemvasia, there will be a long, great day on the MANI Peninsula, one of Greece’s wildest and most beautiful areas—a dramatic coastline of sleepy fishing coves and fortified villages like the beautiful Oitilo, Gerolimenas & Limeni. The amazing DIROS caves that you will optionally explore with a guide and a boat.

Lunch in one of the stone-built villages where Pirates were a permanent threat. Next is SPARTA, the ancient rival of Athens known for its fierce warriors! Wandering around the town of MYSTRAS, and the Byzantine castle, is probably the day’s highlight.

Overnight at lively Sparta or Mystras.

DAY 4: FROM MYSTRAS TO ANCIENT OLYMPIA & THE ARCADIA MOUNTAIN VILLAGES

Option 1: Ancient Olympia

Breakfast and an early start for a long day with two UNESCO World Heritage sites to visit. But first, a quick stop at Sparta to photograph the statue of King Leonidas of the famous 300. Then, a 1h.30′ drive to ancient OLYMPIA to walk through the impressive ruins of the area where athletes trained and ran in the old stadium, just as ancient Olympians did after victory 3,000 years ago. Olympia hosted the original Olympic Games, founded in the 8th century B.C. Its extensive ruins include athletic training areas, a stadium, and temples dedicated to the gods Hera and Zeus.

You will also visit the world-famous Olympia museum and get the chance to see some unbelievable sculptures, such as the sculpted decoration of the marble temple of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the famous Hermes carved by the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles.

If long, straight stretches of road are your thing, you might want to skip this tour. In Greece the mountains are tall and the bends are many, which is a small price to pay for the sheer beauty you will encounter at every turn of this tour.

Next, we head for the Arcadia mountain range in the center of the Peloponnese to overnight at one of its famous stone-built villages.

Option 2 (our preference): Ancient Messene ... not Mycenae!

In terms of size, form, and preservation, Messene is one of the most important cities of antiquity and still offers much to see. It boasts not only religious and public buildings, but also imposing fortifications, houses, and funerary monuments.

The spectacular remains uncovered through excavation—mainly in the last thirty years or so—have made it clear that Messene prospered until well into the Roman period.

The city has the rare advantage of not being destroyed or covered by later settlements, and it is situated in an untouched Mediterranean natural environment. This landscape combines the mountainous majesty of Delphi and the lowland riverine tranquillity of Olympia.

Yes, we can all agree that option 1 is THE FAMOUS “Ancient Olympia”. However, for some, Ancient Messene is -maybe- only second best to the Acropolis and the Parthenon. But it is still even better for the visitor because of the size and the numerous findings! It is not well-known or visited because of its remote location, which is not an issue for this multi-day tour! You can do Messene & Olympia if you are ready for a more extended day at an extra cost.

Optional extra/relax exploring day: Arcadia mountain village

The Arcadia mountain villages, where you overnight on day 4 (halfway through this tour), are ideal if you like to spend an extra night (and day) and still explore locally. There is a lot to see, plus it is a great location and accommodation.

DAY 5: CAVE OF LAKES, ODONTOTOS RACK RAILWAY, RION BRIDGE & DELPHI

[The cog train is currently not operating - please inquire if this is a must for you - options are available]

Breakfast at a mountain village of Arcadia, and we head to another mountain range to visit the very popular Cave of Lakes, which is only the beginning of a long day.

The Cave of Lakes (Arcadia area)

After a fantastic lunch and drinks at the top of the mountains (next to a ski center), you will ride the Odontotos Rack Railway train from the top of the hill down to the coastline through the Vouraikos River/gorge.

Our target for the late afternoon is to reach Delphi by crossing the amazing Rion Bridge, which is one of the world’s longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and the longest of the fully suspended type. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth, linking the Peloponnese peninsula to mainland Greece by road.

The Archaeological Site & Museum of DELPHI, one of the most important in Greece, exhibits the history of the Delphic sanctuary with the most famous ancient Greek oracle. Its rich collections comprise architectural sculptures, statues, and minor objects donated to the sanctuary. These reflect its religious, political, and artistic activities from its early years in the eighth century BC to its decline in Late Antiquity.

After exploring DELPHI, we’ll finally overnight at a surprise location away from the many tourist traps of this highly touristy-spoilt area.

DAY 6: FROM DELPHI TO IOANNINA TOWN

This is a long trip to the northwest of Greece and Ioannina city, the Jewel of Western Greece. There will be many locations to enjoy a coffee break and stretch your legs before arriving at Ioannina.

This elegant town has a long history of multiculturalism. You will immediately be captivated by the legends of Ali Pasha, the one-time Ottoman ruler of the city, the narrow streets of the Castle district, and the beauty of the lake.

Although the next day will be dedicated to exploring the famous Zagorochoria villages, Ioannina will be there for you to enjoy on foot for two evenings. You will spend two nights in this town at a beautiful, ideally placed boutique hotel.

Knowing the area like locals or even better, we will experience the Greek landscape, views, people, food, and hospitality that even Greeks would not know how to.

DAY 7: A DAY TOUR FROM IOANNINA TOWN TO EXPLORE ZAGOROCHORIA (villages)

After you enjoy breakfast, we begin our exploration to travel back in time and visit the famous Zagorochoria, “where stone gives birth to stone”. These are the most famous villages in Greece and a dream visit for even a Greek. This is a day of exploring and trying to fit in as much as possible, depending on your pace and preferences.

We visit the villages we know are the area's trademarks, and the non-touristy ones too! Some incredible viewpoints include the famous Vikos Gorge, the unique village of Aristi, the Rock Pools, the beautiful blue waters of the Voidomatis River, where river rafting begins, and the small and large Papigo villages. Papigo, for many, is considered Greece’s most beautiful mountain village. Walking around the stone-paved alleys is necessary to discover the beauties of this unique place! We will stop for lunch and drinks at a hidden location to enjoy local cuisine and hospitality.

On our way back to our base in Ioannina city, we shall visit a special location from which you can admire the whole city, the lake, and the island inside the lake.

In the evening, you must grab the chance to explore the city’s castle, situated right next to your hotel, and maybe enjoy a walk next to the lake like most of the locals do.

DAY 8: FROM ZAGOROCHORIA TO VERGINA, or THE BAKERY/COOKING EXPERIENCE

Option 1: VERGINA – The royal tombs of Macedonia

We leave this unique area of Greece behind and head towards VERGINA, the royal tombs of Macedonia. We stop for coffee and mix with the locals at the popular, lively mountain town of METSOVO.

We drive on to Vergina (ancient Aigai), near Veria city. At Vergina, you will visit the unique museum located within the Great Tumulus, which covers the royal tombs of Macedonia. Admire the astonishing findings from the tomb of King Phillip II, Alexander’s father, and feel the thrill of the most significant discovery of the 20th century.

In October 2024, a small piece of purple fabric was uncovered in Vergina and thought to have once belonged to Alexander the Great (356-323 BC). If authenticated, this tunic might provide an unprecedented glimpse into Alexander’s personal life and even his adoption of Persian customs. However, questions remain as to whether the tunic indeed belonged to Alexander.

Option 2 (our preference): The Bakery Experience, Perama Cave, and Wine Tasting [Option 2 is subject to availability]

If you've had enough of historic sites, you can skip the royal tombs of Macedonia for a "different" experience—a full day, full of authentic people, tastes, and views. Only the winery OR the cave visit can be added to the bakery/cooking experience. All three activities are not possible!

[1: the cooking experience] As your guests step into our warm, aromatic family bakery, they will join us for a baking and cooking experience they will never forget. Under the expert guidance of Kostas, a Master Baker and true artist/artisan who has perfected his craft over 33 years, they will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of traditional Greek recipes and discover the authentic flavors of this enchanting region while being introduced to the vibrant culture and way of life in our charming village.

During your Bakery experience, Kostas will guide you through the intricacies of crafting authentic Greek pies and sweets exclusive to this region and his family. There is an extra cost of €55 (EUR)/person for the cooking class, with a minimum of 150 EUR.

bakery zotsa ioannina zagorochoria

[2: the winery] As participants will (can be arranged) have a break while the last pies are cooking, they may want to visit one of the two wineries for a tour and tasting.

[3: Perama Cave] As an alternative to wine tasting (if you are not the type), we start the day by visiting Perama Cave and admiring nature's work—a three-story palace with incomparable beauties and wonderful ornaments. It lists 19 species of stalactites and stalagmites, while in other caves, there are 6-10 species at most.

Wine tasting and cave tickets are extra, as are all tickets for sites, boats, trains, etc.

Finally, we depart for Meteora, but we still make a quick stop to enjoy the lively mountain town of Metsovo (depending on the time available after the day's main activities).

Finally, we depart for Meteora, but we still make a quick stop to enjoy the lively mountain town of Metsovo.

Metsovo is a popular winter holiday destination; this tree-shaded village retains its traditional character. It is full of life year-round, generously offering you its natural surroundings. The soothing sound of water in constant motion adds to the majestic atmosphere. Drive on to Meteora for the final overnight and, depending on available time after the day’s main activities, hopefully a quick first visit to the monastery area.

DAY 9: FROM METEORA TO THERMOPYLAE AND BACK TO ATHENS

After breakfast at a hotel directly opposite the famous Meteora monasteries, we will drive for just 10 minutes and then start exploring.

Meteora (“suspended in the air”) was the hiding spot for the monks from the Romans. We explore two (or 3) impressive monasteries, depending on your fitness and speed of exploring. We drive through the Meteora maze, stopping at different spots to take amazing photos and enjoy the fantastic views. Holy Trinity monastery was the filming location in the 1981 James Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only.” Several other films were also shot at the Meteora monasteries. Not all monasteries are open every day. Each day, one of the monasteries is closed. So, we will plan accordingly and make sure you don’t miss any favorites.

We leave Meteora behind to start our drive back to Athens, stopping to stretch our legs at Thermopylae, where the battle between the 300 Spartans and the 200,000 soldiers of the Persian Empire took place. Don’t let anyone tell you that Thermopylae is more than a very historic dot on Google Maps, where you can only admire the statue of Leonidas and let your imagination do the rest.

We will arrive at your hotel in Athens around 17:00-17:30, but we are flexible depending on your plans.

Tour Options

Highly recommended that you add an extra day to this tour in order to visit Hydra Island.

This also has the advantage of a relaxing 2-night stay at the exact location to visit both Nafplio/Mycenae/Epidaurus, and Hydra Island on the next day.

Need to Know

These are reminders and additions to things you have already read in other sections.

All our tours include lunch and drinks, and all multi-day tours include quality accommodation.  Professional guide, dinner (on multi-day tours), and all kinds of tickets (sites, trains, boats, etc) are not included. You can read more about What is included & excluded in our tours and why! from our FAQs-not-4-DUMMIES.

☼ To keep our vehicles fresh and comfortable, we ask that guests avoid eating or drinking (except water). Water is always available, and we’ll stop along the way as needed if you need to snack.

Fish and seafood are not included in our budget, as their costs cannot be estimated with sufficient accuracy in advance. Pescatarian guests are invited to enjoy our delicious vegetarian cuisine during the tour. In the evenings, we’ll recommend the best spots for fresh seafood so you can experience it at your leisure. Got allergies, several restrictions, or foods you don’t enjoy? Tell us in advance, and we’ll do our best to please you!

☼ After you book, we will ask for some of the following: any food allergies, a single passport number (required by local authorities), names of all passengers, luggage details, pickup/drop-off locations, and a WhatsApp number, which is very helpful during the tour.

☼ Luggage is typically not included on day tours. In other situations (multi-day tours or transfers), we expect a maximum of one checked bag per person [65x40x25 cm or 26x16x10 inches] and a carry-on or backpack. We do not allow luggage on the vehicle’s seats or in your laps to protect both our passengers and our vehicles. If you have additional luggage, please let us know in advance. We can arrange for a larger vehicle or help you store part of it. We may have to cancel if you ... surprise us!

☼ If you are too tall or heavy, we need to know in advance! If we have advance notice, we can arrange the appropriate vehicle. Please use 225 lbs (105 Kg) as the maximum weight you need to inform us of. If in doubt, please let us know your weight and height before you book, and we'll get back to you. It’s not a personal question, but for your own comfort! We can use a larger vehicle if we have advance notice.

☼ An adult must always accompany children (minimum age is 8 years). Please let us know if anyone gets car sick! Greece is not flat!

☼ Due to uneven surfaces, most tours are not suitable for people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users. We apologize for this, but if the sites don't or can't accommodate people with mobility issues, we can't help.

We are flexible on tour duration, so there is no rush during the tour. We also expect you to be reasonable and respect your driver/tour leader's efforts. Sometimes there are specific restrictions (like not missing the sites' closing times during the off-season or catching a train, boat, etc.) which will "dictate" our itinerary/timing and require your full cooperation!

(c) When refunding

We (Eudaimonia) receive your (client) payments, which are always subject to processing/transaction fees charged by the online payments company. These fees are acceptable and are considered our expense if they are not greater than the typical 2,90%, which is why we always suggest you avoid American Express or PayPal. In a case of a refund, this “fees-reduced” amount will be considered as the basis to be partially or fully returned, not the actual amount you have paid. Furthermore, you must expect that our refund amount will be subject to processing/transaction fees charged by the online payments company, thus you will receive a smaller amount than our refund amount. When refunding, all processing fees are to be charged on your (the client’s) side.

(d) Special client-specific arrangements/agreements & cancellation policy:

There may be client-specific payments & bookings (full or partial) agreed upon through e-mail communication mentioned -for example, as “non-refundable” or different from the main cancellation policy “refund dates”. Then, these client-specific agreements will take precedence over any interpretations of this main cancellation policy. Therefore, it is the specific written (email) agreement between each client and Eudaimonia that can only precede this main cancellation policy -if it is different- and determines the cancellation policy for each client.

(e) Other issues:

  1. Eudaimonia reserves the right to make subtle changes to tour itineraries. Eudaimonia reserves the right to substitute vehicles and/or drivers should they arise. Eudaimonia reserves the right to change or cancel your booking without penalty, except by offering a full refund. Should change and/or cancellation prove necessary we will give you -if possible- reasonable notice & where available, offer you a comparable alternative. If an alternative is unavailable or unacceptable, you will be entitled to a full refund.
  2. Eudaimonia encourages all clients to communicate as early as possible concerning cancellation issues, which could allow the agency to offer a better refund – partial or complete- to a client despite the standard cancellation policy described in this document. This is a decision not to be discussed with or disputed by the client, and will be made entirely by Eudaimonia to serve the client better, if possible.
  3. Eudaimonia itineraries are flexible, and if possible, the requirements of clients will be facilitated. Eudaimonia reserves the right to vary, modify, or cancel any itinerary, either partly or wholly. Itineraries published are sample itineraries only and may be amended without notice. Eudaimonia also reserves the right to use alternative vehicles to those advertised.
  4. Eudaimonia is not responsible for the costs of any other travel arrangements affected due to our cancellations or rescheduling of any tour departure.
  5. Bookings can only be used by the client (s) to whom the booking was initially arranged; no other person may use the booking under any circumstances.
  6. The client will be asked to provide a valid photo and/or passport number for identification, which is required both for our documentation and for local authorities during random police checks.
  7. Luggage is not included on day tours; only small backpacks are allowed. In other situations (multi-day tours or transfers), we expect a maximum of one checked bag per person [65x40x25 cm or 26x16x10 inches] and a carry-on or backpack. We do not allow luggage on the vehicle’s seats or in the clients’ laps to protect both our passengers and our vehicles. If the clients carry additional luggage, they must let us know in advance. We can arrange for a larger vehicle or help to store part of it. Eudaimonia has the right to cancel if the client shows up with more items or sizes than those listed above.
  8. If a client or clients are too tall or heavy, we (Eudaimonia) need to know in advance! If we have advance notice, we can arrange the appropriate vehicle. As a rule, assume 225 lbs (105 Kg) as the maximum weight you need to inform us of. If in doubt, Eudaimonia expects the client to inform them of their weight and height before booking. It’s not considered a personal question, but for the clients’ comfort and to ensure a suitable vehicle is used! Eudaimonia can offer to use a larger vehicle if there is advance notice or cancel if the above rule is not followed.

(f) Force majeure

It is only at Eudaimonia’s discretion to refund fully, partly, or not at all if a customer cancels under certain conditions, including even “Force Majeure”, medical, etc. Disputing credit card or other means of payment is not permitted. Eudaimonia strongly recommends that the client purchase travel insurance.

Responsibility Clause
Eudaimonia Private Tours, shall not be or become liable or responsible for any loss, injury, or damage to person, property or otherwise in connection with any accommodation, transportation, or other services resulting directly or indirectly, from acts of God, danger, incident to the sea, fire breakdown in machinery or equipment, acts of Government or other authorities, de jure or de facto, wars, thither declared or not, strikes, riots, customs regulations, delays or cancellations, or change of itinerary of schedules.

Baggage is at the owner’s (client’s) risk throughout the tour. Small articles, coats, wraps, cameras, phones, and other hand baggage are entirely under the passenger’s care, who is cautioned about the risk of leaving them in conveyances.

Clients wishing to join a tour or transfer are requested to arrive at the agreed departure point no later than 5 minutes before the scheduled departure time. This applies to all tours and transfers.

The client accepts that certain activities and aspects of Eudaimonia tours are weather-dependent and that under no circumstances can Eudaimonia be held responsible for weather conditions. The client will be informed by email of any potential weather issues and will be asked to decide, in agreement with Eudaimonia, whether to proceed with the tour. In this case, if the tour is completed or attempted, the client will not claim a refund. Rain or even snow is not considered a reason to cancel. Strikes can be grounds for cancellation if they really prevent the tour’s route. Windy weather and port authorities not allowing a boat to run are also reasons to cancel a day tour (but only in the case of a day tour), which is 100% dependent on the boat. A multi-day tour that includes a boat tour will not result in the cancellation of the whole tour, but only in an adjustment or an alternative option to replace the boat tour.

Passport Number
A valid passport must be carried by at least one client when traveling with us. This should be the lead traveler or the person who made the booking/communication, or payment.

Special Requirements and Conditions
At the time of booking, it is the customer’s responsibility to advise us of any special requests and circumstances, such as the need for a child car seat, mobility requirements, passengers who are much taller or heavier than average, food issues, car/boat sickness, excess luggage, etc. Then, we will notify the client in advance if we can accommodate their needs (larger vehicle, alternative options, etc.) and any possible extra costs.

Luggage is not allowed inside the vehicle; it must be stored in the trunk. Even backpacks need to be in the trunk, or it is the passengers’ responsibility to hold them on their laps and avoid scratches to the vehicle’s interior. We ask passengers to “keep their feet on the car’s mats” and not make a mess of the interior, which is kept in excellent condition, as you will see at the start of the tour.

For safety and a comfortable experience, we ask that you let us know in advance the approximate weights/heights of all passengers, as well as the corresponding luggage. This information is used only for vehicle allocation and will remain confidential. Failing to let us know can be grounds for canceling a tour, even when we meet.

Client Behavior
Eudaimonia reserves the right to terminate the transfer if a client’s behavior or conduct is disruptive towards the driver or any of our service providers (hotels, restaurants, etc).

Our drivers/tour leaders are carefully selected individuals who are genuinely polite and well educated. We expect you to treat them with respect. They will be there for you even after their typical 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but please do not take advantage of our “under-promising but over-delivering” attitude. They need their personal time and rest, plus some reporting to us and planning for the following days.

Passengers are forbidden to consume food or any drinks (except water) in our vehicles. Any costs incurred by you or your party due to damages on a tour or transfer must be paid by you (the passenger) or your party at your destination, and we or the supplier will not be liable for these costs.

Eudaimonia operates a strict no-smoking policy on all its vehicles and tours.

Liability
Eudaimonia has no liability for any tour or transfer arrangements, and in particular, for any illness, personal injury, death, or loss of any kind, unless caused by our negligence. Any claim for damages for injury, illness, or death arising from your use of the transfer services must be brought against the operator of the transfer services and will be under the jurisdiction of Greek Law. Eudaimonia operates under a Civil Liability insurance policy as required by Greek Law.

Validity & Disputes

Any disputes will be resolved by the Greek legal system and its laws without the need for any arbitration. If a client is unsuccessful in any legal action instituted against us, the client agrees to pay all our costs, including, but not limited to, legal fees.

The Client agrees to all the above when booking any of Eudaimonia’s tours, transfers, or services.
