Greece’s cuisine is a delicious mix of fresh fish, meat and vegetables cooked with large amounts of lemon, onions, garlic, herbs, and of course olive oil. The local drinks are Ouzo, Tsipouro, Mastic plus really cold beer and wines with rosé being the most popular.

The traditional cuisine in Greece

The traditional cuisine in Greece is typical of the Mediterranean, plus a certain Middle Eastern flair. Olives have been grown in Greece since classical times and their extra virgin oil is always part of many colorful salads full of onions, peppers, “feta” cheese, oregano and tasty tomatoes.
Greece is about culture, history and the islands. BUT, the Greek food is another main reason that “smart” visitors would plan a trip to this country! Check our food tours at the end of this section!

Greek meze* or a main meal

Whether it is a typical Greek meze* or a main meal, don’t hesitate to also try locally produced drinks and desserts. Ouzo, great rosé wine, awesome desserts (baklava, loukoumades, ekmek, kourabiedes, …), Greek coffee, frappe ice coffee. You need to try them all!

*selection of small dishes like tomato/cucumber, fried calamari, grilled octopus, fried vegetables, taramosalata, garlic bread, kalamata or other types of olives, fava beans, melitzanosalata (eggplant salad), fried crusty cheese with lemon (saganaki) and many more, served to accompany alcoholic drinks like ouzo, tsipouro, wine or beer.

Finally, be prepared for some of the locals treating you to extras whether you are in a tavern, guesthouse, traditional coffee shop (“kafenion”), or in a cliff-hanging monastery that you visit! This is what Greek hospitality is all about. But don’t expect it to happen if you are not outgoing and authentic too!
